Grilled Beer Can Chicken
Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside this classic grilling method never fails to impress.

Beer Can Chicken is a crowd-pleasing grilling classic that results in ultra-juicy meat and crispy skin. The steam from the beer keeps the chicken moist, while the dry rub adds bold flavor.
Ingredients
1 (4-pound) whole chicken
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
3 tablespoons of your favorite dry spice rub
1 can of beer (12 ounces)
Directions
Prep the Chicken:
Remove the neck and giblets from the cavity. Rinse the chicken inside and out, then pat it completely dry with paper towels. This helps the skin crisp up on the grill.Season:
Rub the chicken with vegetable oil. Then season generously inside and out with salt, black pepper, and your spice rub of choice. Set the chicken aside.Prepare the Beer:
Open the beer and take a few large sips until the can is about half full. You’ll need the extra space to create steam during cooking.Mount the Chicken:
Place the half-full can of beer on a sturdy surface. Carefully lower the chicken onto the can, inserting it into the cavity. The chicken should sit upright, using its legs and the beer can as a tripod.Grill Setup:
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat using indirect heat meaning no coals or burners directly under the chicken. Place the bird-on-a-can in the center of the grate.Grill:
Cover the grill and cook the chicken for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until:Internal temp is 165°F in the breast
180°F in the thigh
Juices run clear when pierced
Rest and Serve:
Carefully remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for 10 minutes. Gently remove the beer can (use tongs or a towel it will be hot!). Carve and serve.
Tips & Tricks
Use a beer can chicken holder for added stability.
Swap beer for another canned beverage (like cola or hard cider) for a different flavor.
Add aromatic herbs (like thyme or rosemary) to the beer for extra infusion.
Want crispier skin? Skip the beer and roast the chicken upright using the same spice rub technique.
