Too Many Brazil Nuts? Here’s What Can Happen

Packed with nutrients and dangerously high in selenium Brazil nuts are a superfood best consumed in moderation.

Brazil nuts are often praised for their rich, creamy texture and high nutrient content. Just one or two can deliver impressive amounts of healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants. But behind their superfood status lies a cautionary truth: Brazil nuts contain exceptionally high levels of selenium, a mineral that’s beneficial in small amounts but toxic in excess.

If you're snacking on Brazil nuts daily or eating them by the handful, here's what could happen to your body when you overdo it.

Why Brazil Nuts Are So Potent

Brazil nuts are one of the most concentrated natural sources of selenium, a trace mineral essential for:

  • Thyroid health

  • Hormone regulation

  • DNA synthesis

  • Immune function and infection resistance

  • Reproductive health

While the recommended daily intake of selenium is just 55 micrograms, a single Brazil nut can contain between 58 to 91 micrograms. That means even one nut can meet or exceed your daily needs. A one-ounce serving (roughly 6 nuts) can contain around 544 micrograms, or nearly 990% of the daily value.

The Danger of Too Much Selenium

Your body only needs a small amount of selenium, and consuming too much can lead to a condition known as selenosis or selenium toxicity. This happens when selenium builds up in your body over time and starts to interfere with normal functions.

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for selenium is 400 micrograms per day. Consistently exceeding this can trigger unwanted symptoms or, in rare cases, serious health issues.

Common Symptoms of Selenium Toxicity

These may occur even with mild overconsumption:

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Fatigue or irritability

  • Stomach pain

  • Garlicky breath or a metallic taste

  • Brittle nails or nail loss

  • Hair thinning or loss

  • Mild skin rashes

More Severe Symptoms

If high selenium intake continues unchecked, the effects can become more serious:

  • Muscle tenderness or tremors

  • Lightheadedness or flushing

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Nervous system disruption

  • Kidney or liver dysfunction

  • Heart failure or heart attack (in extreme cases)

While such severe outcomes are rare, they’ve been documented in medical literature especially when individuals consume more than 300 micrograms daily over extended periods.

Can Selenium Toxicity Be Fatal?

Yes though uncommon, selenium toxicity can be fatal when exposure is extremely high or prolonged. Research suggests that mortality risk begins to rise at chronic intake levels of 300 micrograms per day, especially in people with underlying health conditions. Since that threshold can be reached by eating just 4–5 Brazil nuts, it’s easy to overdo it if you’re not paying attention.

How Many Brazil Nuts Are Safe?

The good news? You don’t have to give up Brazil nuts entirely. One nut per day is generally considered safe for most people and will still provide your daily selenium requirement. If you enjoy them regularly:

  • Stick to 1–2 Brazil nuts per day, not a full handful.

  • Avoid selenium supplements if you’re already getting enough through diet.

  • Be mindful of other selenium-rich foods (e.g., tuna, eggs, sunflower seeds) to prevent stacking your intake.

A one-time high intake likely won’t cause lasting damage, but frequent overconsumption can build up over time and cause health issues.

The Bottom Line

Brazil nuts can absolutely be part of a healthy diet but moderation is key. Thanks to their incredibly high selenium content, it’s easy to get too much of a good thing. Eating just one nut a day is enough to meet your needs and avoid the potential side effects of selenium overload.
