Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 3/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons white sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1 extra-large egg, at room temperature

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (plus extra for topping)

  • 1/2 cup holiday M&Ms (plus extra for topping)

  • 2 tablespoons holiday jimmy sprinkles (plus extra for topping)

Directions

1. Prepare the Pan

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).

  • Line an 8x8-inch square pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on all sides for easy removal.

2. Mix the Dough

  • In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, white sugar, salt, and nutmeg until well combined.

  • Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.

  • Stir in the flour and baking soda until just combined.

  • Fold in the chocolate chips, M&Ms, and sprinkles.

3. Assemble and Bake

  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it into an even layer.

  • Sprinkle additional chocolate chips, M&Ms, and sprinkles evenly over the top.

  • Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the bars are puffed and golden brown on top.

4. Cool and Cut

  • Remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool completely.

  • Use the parchment overhang to lift the bars out of the pan. Cut into squares or rectangles.

Tips for Success

  • Customize the Toppings: Use white chocolate chips, crushed peppermint candies, or other festive toppings to make these bars your own.

  • Don’t Overbake: Keep an eye on the bars during the final minutes of baking. Slightly underbaking ensures a soft and chewy texture.

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days, or freeze for longer storage.

These Christmas cookie bars are the perfect combination of festive colors, rich flavors, and chewy goodness. Make them for your next holiday gathering and watch them disappear in no time!
