As cold and flu season approaches, social media has a new wellness obsession fire cider. Touted as a natural way to boost immunity, this spicy-sour elixir has gained popularity on TikTok, where users claim it helps them stay healthy through the winter. But does it really live up to the hype?
While fire cider does contain several immune-supporting ingredients, health experts agree: it’s not a miracle cure. Still, it might earn a small spot in your cold season toolkit if you can handle the heat.
What Is Fire Cider?
Fire cider is a homemade tonic made by infusing a mix of raw ingredients in apple cider vinegar. The traditional recipe includes:
Turmeric
Apple cider vinegar
Lemon
Grapefruit
Raw garlic
Jalapeño
Cloves
Some versions add onion, horseradish, honey, or other herbs. After steeping for several weeks, the mixture is strained and taken by the spoonful or shot glass.

“Just drinking this mixture alone will not work magic for building a stronger immune system,” said dietitian Leah Barron, RD.

Potential Downsides
Acidic and spicy: Citrus and vinegar may trigger acid reflux, heartburn, or indigestion, especially in sensitive individuals.
Tooth enamel erosion: Vinegar is highly acidic and can wear down enamel over time. Always dilute fire cider or use a straw to minimize contact with teeth.
Digestive discomfort: Ingredients like garlic and peppers can cause bloating or diarrhea in some people.

Tastier Alternatives
You can still get all the benefits of fire cider’s ingredients through food—minus the burn:
