Homemade Mozzarella Sticks
Crispy, golden, and gooey with melty cheese these double-breaded mozzarella sticks are the ultimate comfort snack.

Mozzarella sticks are one of those timeless appetizers that never go out of style. Perfectly crisp on the outside and irresistibly gooey inside, they’re a nostalgic favorite for kids and adults alike. And while it may be tempting to grab a frozen box at the grocery store, nothing compares to the flavor and crunch of homemade mozzarella sticks especially when served with a robust, slow-simmered marinara sauce.
Here’s how to make restaurant-quality mozzarella sticks right in your kitchen, with a simple ingredient list and a few clever tips for perfect results every time.
Ingredients You’ll Need
For the Mozzarella Sticks:
1 ½ cups Italian-style dried breadcrumbs
1 ⅓ cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon salt
2 (16-ounce) blocks pasteurized mozzarella, cut into 4 x ½-inch sticks
4 large eggs, beaten
1 ½ cups vegetable oil, for frying
4 cups marinara sauce (recipe below)
For the Marinara Sauce:
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 small onions, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
2 carrots, peeled and finely chopped
½ teaspoon sea salt (plus more to taste)
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (plus more to taste)
2 (32-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
2 dried bay leaves
Instructions
Step 1: Bread the Mozzarella
In a medium bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, 1 cup of Parmesan, and salt.
Dip each mozzarella stick in the beaten eggs, letting excess drip off.
Coat with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing to adhere.
Repeat the egg and breadcrumb dip a second time for extra crunch.
Place coated sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 2 hours (or up to 2 days). Freezing helps the cheese stay intact during frying.
Step 2: Make the Marinara Sauce
In a large pot over medium-high heat, warm olive oil.
Add onions and garlic; sauté until translucent, about 10 minutes.
Add celery, carrots, salt, and pepper; cook until soft, about 10 minutes.
Stir in crushed tomatoes and bay leaves. Simmer uncovered on low for about 1 hour until thickened.
Remove bay leaves, taste, and adjust seasoning.
(Tip: You can make this sauce a day ahead just reheat before serving.)
Step 3: Fry the Mozzarella Sticks
Heat vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
Working in batches, fry the mozzarella sticks for about 1 minute per side, or until golden brown.
Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan cheese and serve hot with marinara sauce.
Tips for Success
Be sure to double-coat each stick for a crispier exterior and better cheese containment.
Freeze thoroughly to prevent cheese leakage during frying.
Serve immediately for maximum meltiness.
Serving Suggestions
These mozzarella sticks are perfect as an appetizer, party snack, or cozy indulgence during movie night. Pair with extra marinara, a creamy garlic dip, or even a spicy arrabbiata if you're craving some heat.
In Summary
These homemade mozzarella sticks are worth the effort crispy, cheesy, and paired with a deeply flavorful marinara made from scratch. Once you try them fresh from the pan, you may never go back to frozen again.
