How to Boost Creativity and Unlock Your Brain’s Potential

Science-backed ways to cultivate creativity, no matter your brain type.

Many people believe they are either left-brained (analytical and logical) or right-brained (creative and intuitive). But is this distinction real? Not exactly.

Right Brain vs. Left Brain: Is It a Myth?

It’s true that some brain functions are lateralized for example, language processing occurs mostly on the left side, while spatial awareness is more right-dominant. However, there’s no scientific proof that personality traits or creativity are confined to one hemisphere.

A 2013 brain scan study published in PLOS One examined over 1,000 people and found no evidence that individuals are strictly right- or left-brained. Instead, both hemispheres work together for most cognitive tasks.

"The differences between right-hemisphere and left-hemisphere functions are subtle, not completely understood, and not as clear-cut as many believe," says James E. Maddux, PhD, of George Mason University.

Can You Train Your Brain to Be More Creative?

Although there’s no single ‘creative part’ of the brain, creativity is a skill that can be cultivated. Here are four science-backed ways to boost creativity:

1. Take a Class and Practice Regularly

  • Creativity thrives on practice and skill-building.

  • "Taking a class is one of the best ways to improve," says Maddux.

  • Whether it’s writing, painting, music, or design, honing your craft enhances creative expression.

2. Meditate to Clear Your Mind

  • Meditation reduces stress and enhances focus, which can increase creativity.

  • Studies show mindfulness meditation helps generate new ideas by allowing the brain to make unexpected connections.

3. Seek Out New Experiences

  • Exposure to new stimuli activates neural pathways, making your brain more adaptable.

  • Try:
    Taking a different route home.
    Listening to new music.
    Trying a new cuisine.
Learning a new language or skill.

4. Surround Yourself with Creativity

  • Creativity is contagious! Immerse yourself in art, music, and nature.

  • Visit museums, concerts, parks, or creative spaces to spark inspiration.

  • Platforms like Pinterest or Etsy can also stimulate visual creativity.

The Bottom Line

Creativity isn’t about right-brain vs. left-brain dominance it’s about cultivating skills, exposure, and experiences. Whether through practice, meditation, or new activities, anyone can train their brain to be more creative.
