OTC Hearing Aids Have Limits

Who OTC hearing aids are for, why their limits matter and what to check before buying.

Over-the-counter hearing aids are for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, according to the FDA. They are not intended for severe or profound hearing loss.

The FDA says people 18 years of age and older can buy these devices in stores or online without a prescription or a visit to a hearing professional. Their maximum sound output is limited, which is why they may not provide enough benefit for more severe hearing loss.

If you or someone close to you suspects more severe hearing loss, the FDA advises consulting a licensed hearing health care professional. The agency says prescription hearing aids can be programmed by that professional for a person’s level of hearing loss.

Before buying, review the packaging and any return or warranty terms, the FDA advises. Manufacturers are not required to provide a warranty, and the agency cautions that claims of FDA registration or certification on packaging may be misleading.
