TikTok has introduced plenty of bizarre food trends, from whipped coffee to baked feta pasta. The latest? People stuffing handfuls of raw spinach into their mouths straight from the fridge, claiming it offers a “max nutritional benefit” and can even curb cravings. But does this trend actually have any scientific backing, or is it just another internet fad?
What Is the Raw Spinach Trend?
The concept is simple:
Eat one handful of raw spinach first thing in the morning.
No dressing, no seasoning just plain spinach.
No other food is consumed alongside it.
Despite the questionable appeal, videos of people chewing their way through cold spinach leaves have gained traction, with claims that it helps “train your tastebuds” and reduces sugar and carb cravings throughout the day.
Does Science Support This Trend?
There’s no solid research proving that eating raw spinach first thing in the morning will curb cravings. Some TikTok users reference a University of Buffalo study on rats, which found that a protein in saliva adapts to bitter foods over time, making them taste more neutral. However, human studies have shown that denying cravings can actually lead to increased appetite and binge eating.
That said, food sequencing starting meals with vegetables before consuming proteins and carbohydrates has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels and improve satiety. This means that incorporating spinach into your meals could be beneficial, but there’s no need to eat it plain and unseasoned at the crack of dawn.
Is Eating Spinach This Way Harmful?
Not really unless you find it unpleasant enough to trigger a gag reflex. There’s also a mild choking hazard if you try to swallow too much at once.

But she also notes that there’s no need to force down raw spinach if you don’t enjoy it.
