The Rise of Salmon Sperm Facials in Anti-Aging Skin Care

This Korean beauty treatment is gaining traction in the U.S., but does applying salmon DNA to your face really help your skin?

A new skincare trend from Korea is making waves in the U.S., and it’s turning heads for more than just its results. Enter the salmon sperm facial, a treatment that harnesses DNA components from salmon sperm to supposedly rejuvenate and repair aging skin. Yes, really.

With celebrity fans like Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian reportedly on board, this anti-aging trend also known as a PDRN facial is gaining popularity in high-end spas and dermatology clinics across the country.

But what’s really behind this buzz-worthy beauty treatment? Here's what the science and skin experts have to say.

What Is a Salmon Sperm Facial?

Despite its unusual name, a salmon sperm facial isn’t quite as wild as it sounds. The key ingredient is PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) a compound derived from the DNA of salmon sperm. According to dermatologists, these purified DNA fragments are processed to support skin regeneration, hydration, and collagen production.

“In the U.S., it’s typically applied as a mask or serum,” explained Dr. Mansha Sethi Thacker, a board-certified dermatologist. “In some cases, it’s paired with microneedling or laser treatments for deeper penetration.”

In countries like South Korea, PDRN is often injected directly into the skin, but in the U.S., topical and non-invasive options are more common.

How Does It Work?

Dr. Hannah Kopelman, a dermatologist and aesthetic specialist, noted that the polynucleotides extracted from salmon DNA help stimulate cell repair and collagen synthesis two key processes in maintaining youthful, healthy skin.

“While it’s not literal sperm being applied,” she clarified, “the DNA is carefully extracted, purified, and broken down into compounds that support skin regeneration.”

These facials are often combined with other skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid or peptides to enhance hydration and elasticity.

Potential Benefits of Salmon Sperm Facials

Though the science is still developing, preliminary studies and anecdotal reports suggest a range of skincare benefits, including:

  • Anti-aging effects: PDRN may help minimize fine lines and improve skin elasticity by boosting collagen.

  • Smoother texture: With more collagen and hydration, users often report more radiant and even-toned skin.

  • Improved hydration: One study found PDRN helped increase skin moisture levels, making it ideal for dry or mature skin.

  • Anti-inflammatory support: Animal research shows promising anti-inflammatory effects, though its relevance in facial treatments is still being explored.

  • Wound healing: Some studies show that PDRN supports tissue repair, but more human research is needed to confirm these findings.

Are There Any Risks or Downsides?

While the treatment is generally considered safe, experts say there are a few important caveats:

  • Lack of regulation: PDRN injections are not currently FDA-approved in the U.S., meaning there are no standardized safety guidelines.

  • Possible allergic reactions: As with any biologically derived product, there’s a risk of irritation or allergy especially for those with sensitive skin.

  • Ethical concerns: If you follow a vegan or cruelty-free lifestyle, animal-derived ingredients like salmon DNA may be a dealbreaker.

  • Infection risk: If paired with microneedling or injections, there’s a small risk of infection, particularly when not performed by a licensed professional.

Dr. Kopelman adds, “Right now, I’d call it an intriguing trend with potential, but not a miracle solution.”

The Bottom Line

Salmon sperm facials are certainly one of the more unusual beauty trends to hit the U.S., but early signs show they might offer real skin benefits especially in terms of hydration, collagen support, and anti-aging effects. Still, these treatments are best reserved for those who are open to animal-based products and willing to consult a board-certified provider before diving in.
