Why Hitting the Gym While Traveling Is About More Than Just Fitness

Exploring new places through their local workout culture can add a whole new dimension to your trip.

For years, I rolled my eyes at people who hit the gym while on vacation. Surely calories didn’t count when you were out of the country? But once frequent travel became a part of my life, I realized that if I wanted to maintain any kind of fitness routine, I had to take it on the road.

What started as a necessity quickly became something else an unexpected way to experience different cultures. From rooftop workouts in Spain to Zumba classes in Uganda, I discovered that gyms offer more than just a place to break a sweat. They provide a unique glimpse into the local way of life.

The Universal Yet Unique Gym Experience

No matter where you go, gyms have familiar elements: the clanging of weights, the scent of sweat, and the determined faces of people pushing through their workouts. But step into a gym abroad, and you’ll find that exercise culture varies widely.

  • In Seoul, I stumbled into a gym that doubled as a shrine to Korean bodybuilding legends.

  • In San Francisco, a jet-lagged 4:30 a.m. workout led to conversations with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.

  • In Thailand, I marveled at the barefoot, bikini-clad lifters effortlessly powering through their routines.

These experiences made me realize that a gym can be more than just a place to train it can be a portal into a city’s culture.

Fitness as a Form of Tourism

Finding a gym while traveling isn’t just about maintaining fitness it’s about exploration. A workout might introduce you to local fitness trends, new post-workout drinks, or even an unexpected scenic view.

  • A walk to a gym in Geneva led me to a part of the city I would have otherwise missed.

  • A New Year’s Day workout in Bali surrounded me with Viking-esque gym-goers, reigniting my motivation for the year ahead.

  • A drop-in class at an F45 in another city made me realize just how much progress I had made in my training.

There’s also something empowering about walking into an unfamiliar gym and figuring things out. The initial nerves wondering if you’ll fit in, if you’re using the equipment correctly fade when you realize that gym-goers worldwide share a common purpose: to move, to challenge themselves, to feel better.

How to Make the Most of a Gym While Traveling

Not every gym session will be life-changing, but with a little effort, your workout can become part of the adventure.

  • Choose a gym with local character. Avoid the generic hotel gym if possible seek out a fitness studio or a community gym where locals train.

  • Be open to new workouts. Whether it’s a salsa-inspired class or a rooftop HIIT session, trying something different can make your workout more memorable.

  • Pack light but smart. Sneakers take up space, but if fitness is part of your routine, they’re worth it.

  • Use workouts as an opportunity to explore. A walk or jog to a gym can lead you to hidden gems in a new city.

The Bottom Line

For many, exercise feels like an obligation. But when you view it through the lens of travel, it transforms into an experience one that connects you to new people, places, and cultures. Hitting the gym while traveling isn’t just about maintaining fitness; it’s about embracing the worldwide workout.
